Population Health Management

“The ability to analyze hundreds of millions of pages of documents from health service organizations is a new paradigm. This is a fantastic opportunity to better understand the way health systems work and their effect on the health and well-being of the people of the UK.”

My colleagues and I from Swansea University are in the big health data business. For many years we’ve been working with NHS organizations around the UK to help them re-use their data―the data they collect every day about their patients―for the purposes of research, improving policy and improving healthcare organizations.

Our work to date is focused mainly on acquiring and reusing structured information that is captured and stored in codified or classified form. This is easy for computers to store and easy to for analysts to reuse.

But the world is changing. Health organizations are increasingly storing electronic documents which seldom contain structured information. Much more often free text or natural language is being used because this is the preferred communication method for people, particularly healthcare professionals. Free text contains a wealth of detail that is difficult to capture in structured form.

At the FARR Institute we’ve been working on developing a new technology we call Research Data Appliances. These appliances are designed for health organizations to bring together large, structured data sets for secondary uses and to safely share it with researchers.

We’ve been working with Clinithink for a number of years and we’re very pleased to incorporate their CLiX CNLP platform into our appliances. Ideally suited for this purpose, CLiX CNLP takes large volumes of unstructured data and produces high quality, codified data which is converted into structured forms to easily consume store.

The ability to analyze hundreds of millions of pages of documents from health service organizations is a new paradigm. This is a fantastic opportunity to better understand the way health systems work and their effect on the health and well-being of the people of the UK.

Speech Recognition Enablement

“The Clinithink CLiX CNLP and CLiX ENRICH solutions enable us to provide structure to unstructured clinical narrative for the NHS Trusts to perform meaningful analysis on the data.”

G2 Speech is a market leader in speech recognition and workflow management. Thousands of documents are produced within our workflow across the UK National Health Service (NHS) and a majority of these contain unstructured narrative. The Clinithink solutions enable us to encode and provide structure to this unstructured clinical narrative, then abstract against certain query sets so the NHS trusts can perform meaningful analysis on this data for clinical trials, decision support and clinical quality and population management across the UK.

Clinithink’s technology was originally developed by NHS consultants who understood how the NHS operates and the problems and issues that arise. As experts in the field of encoding and abstracting data, Clinithink was the obvious partner.
